Polyelectrolytes

Polyelectrolytes are a special class of polymers that bear an ionic charge. We specialize in the fundamental investigation of how oppositely charged polymers interact and respond to external stimuli (temperature, pH, salt).

Polyelectrolyte multilayers

Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) are prepared through layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. LbL assembly consists in the alternative deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes onto a substrate. PEMs have potential to be used in several applications (e.g., biomedicine, anticorrosion, energy storage, etc).

Thus, our group specializes in the fabrication of PEMs and in the study of their thermal and viscoelastic properties as well as their swelling behavior.

Polyelectrolyte complexes

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are prepared through the mixture of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. PECs, just like PEMs, have potential to be used in several applications.

Thus, our group specializes in the study of thermal properties of PECs as a function of polyelectrolyte type, pH, salt, and water content.
